Hype around the metaverse continues to grow within the big-tech economy.
FREMONT, CA: The big-tech sector is experiencing an ongoing increase in the hype surrounding the metaverse. By 2026, 25 per cent of the world's population will log onto the metaverse at least once a day, whether to purchase, work, go to events, or just socialise. However, the wide range of technologies supporting the metaverse, including blockchain, 5G, AI, VR, and AR, all raise data security and privacy concerns.

33 per cent of developers think these are the greatest challenges the metaverse must face.
75 per cent of all firms will restructure risk and security governance for digital transformation due to the proliferation of attack surfaces and vulnerabilities, insider activities, and collapsing cybersecurity threats. The privacy of personal data has been addressed by recent legislation. For instance, the right to be forgotten granted by the GDPR mandates that businesses be ready to delete customer information at the customer's request. Additionally, it requires private companies to get individuals' permission before storing personal data.
The market for helping businesses comply is expanding, and European regulators have begun to take harsher enforcement measures. Organisations aiming for leadership in the metaverse must prioritise data privacy and security more than ever as regulations get stricter.
Web2 to Web3: The Changing Face of Digital Privacy
Although digital privacy on websites is now mostly regulated, the metaverse is still extremely young and lacks privacy laws. The breakout metaverses will be ones where individuals can have real experiences they can't currently accomplish in the real world. Many businesses are attempting to create something that has the allure of Fortnite or Minecraft but allows users to do more than just play battle royale games.
Because 20 minutes of virtual reality (VR) use generates almost two million unique data components, the threat to privacy in Web3 and the metaverse is larger than in Web2. These include, among many other things, how people breathe, walk, think, move, and stare. To get information, the algorithms map the user's body language. Consent is almost impossible to get in the metaverse because data collecting is ongoing and involuntary.
Current data protection regulations grossly unaddressed the privacy concerns of these technologies. According to research, a machine learning algorithm could successfully identify a user with 95 per cent accuracy, given just five minutes of VR data that had been scrubbed of all personally identifiable information. Most biometrics laws don't cover this kind of information.
