One of the biggest challenges I face in a large multinational company is effective communication, especially across different geographies. The corporate world is often siloed, making collaboration essential. Ensuring that my teams communicate effectively among themselves and with the rest of the business is crucial for success. Another key challenge is educating leadership on cybersecurity risks. Often, company executives do not fully grasp the complexities of physical and cybersecurity threats. I take the time to explain these risks clearly to gain leadership support and ensure that security measures are understood and prioritized.
Keeping up with technological advancements is also a major concern. With rapid developments in IoT and AI, selecting the right technology for our organization can be daunting. The financial stakes are high and making the wrong investment can lead to inefficiencies and financial losses. I rely on peer discussions within the industry to share insights and make informed technology adoption decisions.
Innovative Cybersecurity Projects Driving Change
We are currently undergoing a large-scale global security deployment project. The initiative focuses on standardizing access control across all locations, with North America nearing completion. A key component of this project is the integration of Physical Identity Access Management (PIAM), linking access control with workforce management software like Workday to automate onboarding and offboarding.

Along with this, we are integrating access control systems with procurement processes to accurately track contractor work hours and validate invoices. Ensuring upfront data accuracy in this integration is a time-intensive but a valuable effort.

AI will be a game changer in both cybersecurity and physical security. AI is becoming essential in managing platforms, access controls, antivirus protections and perimeter security. It will allow small security teams to respond more efficiently to incidents and enhance overall security operations.
Depending on your company’s industry, the focus on AI-driven security will vary. In our environment—the mining, metals and chemical industry—I foresee AI becoming a game changer. Many of our systems require large-scale deployment, demanding significant human resources to maintain. The development of AI simplifies and optimizes these operations, making security management more efficient.
Another area poised for significant advancements is drone technology and its integration with security, cybersecurity, and physical security. I am closely monitoring regulatory developments in the U.S. Congress regarding drone security, as these will impact how the private sector can adopt these advancements.

Two key principles guide my approach to cybersecurity leadership:
1. Inspect what you expect: Always verify outcomes rather than assuming that projects or employees are progressing as expected. Regular inspections ensure accountability and effectiveness.
2. Centralized decentralization: While maintaining centralized command over security operations, decentralizing execution allows field teams to implement strategies effectively based on their unique environments.
